Text: Romans 6:6
Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Series: Seven Different Perspectives of the Cross
Introduction:
We talk about the cross, the facts of the cross, what it means to us. That’s it! The cross is much more than that. We are going to take a closer look at the cross from seven distinct points of view:
- What the Cross meant to God.
- What the Cross meant to Christ.
- What the Cross meant to Satan.
- What the Cross means to the World.
- What the Cross means to the Church.
- What the Cross means to the Christian’s struggle against sin. (The Cross and Sin)
- What the Cross means in Heaven.
We will be addressing the big question "What does the Cross mean to YOU?"
Sin Verse Grace (Reign)
Romans 5:21
That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
The Question and Answer
Romans 6:1-2
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
What We Know
Romans 6:6
Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
- Justification and Sanctification
1 Corinthians 6:11
And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
Justification
Romans 4:5
5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
God declares us righteous in his eyes.
Justified right margin – straight from top to bottom (justified – straight in the eyes of God)
This happens when you are saved. This takes place in heaven.
Justification changes your standing, not your state. Even after coming to Christ, you still maintain an inner desire to sin. The things that tempted you before will probably still tempt you after you are saved
Sanctification
1 Thessalonians 4:3-4
3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:
4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;
God takes forgiven sinners and progressively makes them holy.
The difference between Justification and Sanctification
Justification is that act whereby God declares you righteous in his eyes.
Sanctification is that act whereby God makes you righteous
Justification occurs when you trust Christ and is never repeated.
Sanctification occurs continually as you surrender your life to the Lord.
Justification delivers fron the penalty of sin.
Sanctification delivers from the power of sin
Justification is an event.
Sanctification is a process.
Justification happens once and only once.
Sanctification is gradual and continuous.
Justification cannot be repeated.
Sanctification must be repeated.
Justification is the work of a moment.
Sanctification is the work of a lifetime.
Justification gives you the merit of Christ.
Sanctification gives you the character of Christ.
Romans 6:6
Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
If a Child of God, your life has two parts:
B.C. Before Christ (old man)
A.D. After Deliverance (with him)
Romans 6:6
Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Romans 6:7
For he that is dead is freed from sin.
Closing
John 8:36
If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
