Text:
Matthew 2:1-12 (read verses 1-2, 5-6, 9-11)
1
Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem
of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men
from the
east to Jerusalem,
2
Saying, Where is he that is born King of the
Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship
him.
3
When
Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all
Jerusalem
with him.
4
And when
he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people
together, he
demanded of them where Christ should be born.
5
And they said unto
him, In Bethlehem
of Judaea: for
thus it is written by the
prophet,
6
And thou Bethlehem,
in the land
of Juda,
art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come
a
Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.
7
Then
Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, inquired of them
diligently
what time the star appeared.
8
And he
sent them to Bethlehem,
and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye
have found
him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.
9 When
they had heard the king, they departed; and,
lo, the star, which
they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over
where the
young child was.
10
When they saw the star, they rejoiced with
exceeding great joy.
11
And when they were come into the house, they
saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell
down, and worshipped
him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him
gifts;
gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
12
And being warned of
God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into
their
own country another way.
Introduction:
a.
Story of wise men bringing gifts.
1. What
God Gave
a. His
Son
Matthew
2:1
Now
when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in
the days of Herod
the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
John
3:16
For
God so loved the world, that he gave
his only begotten Son,
that whosoever
believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Galatians
4:4-5
4 But
when the
fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of
a woman, made
under the law,
5
To redeem them that were under the law, that we might
receive the adoption of sons.
John
17:3, 8, 18, 21,
23, 25 (1
time send, 6 times sent
–seven times in the Lord’s Prayer. Six
times about Jesus, once about us)
3
And this is life
eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus
Christ, whom
thou hast 1sent.
8
For I have given unto
them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and
have
known surely that I came out from thee, and they have
believed that thou
didst 2send me.
18 As
thou hast 3sent
me into the world, even so have I also 4sent them into the world.
21
That they all may be
one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be
one in
us: that the world may believe that thou hast 5sent
me.
23
I in them, and thou
in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the
world may know
that thou hast 6sent me, and
hast loved them, as thou hast
loved me.
25
O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I
have known thee, and these have known that thou hast 7sent
me.
2. Useless
Gifts
a. The
wise men brought gifts meant for a King.
Matthew
2:11
And
when they were come into the house, they saw the young
child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when
they
had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and
frankincense, and myrrh.
b. Can
you imagine Jesus response to these Gifts?
1. Gold
(very rare on earth) – pavement (in heaven).
2. Frankincense
– I made that (nothing compared to the smells of heaven,
Revelation 5:8).
3. Myrrh
(used in embalming the dead, John 19:39) – I
won’t be needing that.
c. We
find no mention in the bible of Jesus ever using these gifts.
d. If
what the wise men brought was of no use to Jesus, what possibly could
you and I
bring that would be acceptable to Emanuel – God with us.
3. Useful
Gift
a. What
the wise men gave that was meaningful to Jesus
Matthew
2:11
And
when they were come into the house, they
saw
the young child with Mary his mother, and fell
down, and worshipped him:
and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him
gifts; gold,
and frankincense, and myrrh.
4. What
We Can Give Him
a. Give
Him your Heart
Acts
8:36-38
36
And as they went on
their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here
is
water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
37
And Philip said, If
thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he
answered and said,
I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
38
And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they
went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he
baptized him.
Romans
10:8-10
8
But what saith it? The
word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that
is, the
word of faith, which we preach;
9
That if thou shalt
confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in
thine heart that
God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For
with the heart man believeth unto righteousness;
and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Ephesians
3:17
That
Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith;
that ye, being rooted
and grounded in love,
Colossians
3:15
And
let the peace of God rule in your hearts,
to the which also ye
are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
James
4:8
Draw
nigh to God,
and he will draw nigh
to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts,
ye
double minded.
1
Peter 3:15
But
sanctify the Lord God in your hearts:
and be ready always to
give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that
is in you
with meekness and fear:
Psalms
51:10
Create
in me a clean heart, O God;
and renew a right
spirit within me.
5. Closing
a. What
God does with our heart
Galatians
4:6
And
because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the
Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
