Title: What I want for Christmas

Text: Hebrews 2:9

But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

Introduction:

Have you been asked what you want for Christmas?

Have you asked someone what they want for Christmas?

What was the answer?

I want us to consider our text in light of Christmas and see if it changes what you want for Christmas.

Hebrews 2:9 (But we see Jesus,)

It seems today that Christmas is about everything but Jesus.

    1.      The Birth of Jesus Christ

    a.       The Wise Men Saw Jesus

Matthew 2:1-6, 11 (4-5, 11)

4, And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.

5, And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,

11, And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

    b.      The Shepherd’s Saw Jesus

Luke 2:11-12, 15-16

11, For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

12, And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

15, And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

16, And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger

    c.       Simeon Saw Jesus

Luke 2:25-30

25, And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

26, And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

27, And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,

28, Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,

29, Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:

30, For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,

    d.      Anna Saw Jesus

Luke 2:36-38

36, And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;

37, And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

38, And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem

    e.       But So Few Saw Jesus

At the birth of Jesus, God sent a Star to show the place of His birth, God sent Angels to announce the time of His birth.

Those who were willing to see and hear God’s message, saw Jesus. (Wise Men and Shepherds)

Those who were willing to wait on God, Saw Jesus. (Simeon and Anna)

John 1:10-13

10, He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

11, He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

12, But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

13, Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God?

    2.      So What Do You See

Hebrews 2:9

But we see Jesus,

Hebrews 2:3

How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

The we, in the book of Hebrews is of third generation, they did not of direct contact with Jesus. So what do we see?

Ephesians 2:20

And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

Hebrews 2:8b

But now we see not yet all things put under him.

Hebrews 2:9

But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

Hebrews 2:1-3,9

1, Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.

2, For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;

3, How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

9, But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

    3.      What I Want For Christmas Is – But We See JESUS

    a.           See Jesus as God’s gift

John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Ephesians 2:8-9

8, For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

9, Not of works, lest any man should boast.

John 1:12

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

    4.      Closing

Hebrews 2:9-10

9, But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

10, For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
