Title: The Anointed of the Lord

Text: Isaiah 61:1-3

61 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.

Introduction:

a.       Isaiah speaks of Jesus. Some prophesies are at times hard to interpret, but not this one.

Luke 4:16-17

16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,

b.      This is about 1 year into Jesus ministry, it marks the beginning of His public ministry in the area of the Sea of Galilee, based in Capernaum.

c.       Jesus used as His text Isaiah 61:1-2a which is a prophetic picture of the coming Messiahs’ ministry.

1.      Jesus in the Synagogue to Read

Luke 4:16

And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

a.        Nazareth, where he was brought up, everyone know him.

Luke 4:22

And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?

b.      As custom, he went into the synagogue.

c.       Stood up to read. (The Synagogue service had three parts)

1.      The reading of the Law (Moses) (three year cycle)

Acts 13:14-15, 27

14 But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down.

15 And after the reading of the 1law and the 2prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of 3exhortation for the people, say on.

27 For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him.

Acts 15:21

For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.

Acts 17:2

2And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

Acts 18:4

4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.

Luke 4:15

And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.

Luke 4:18-19

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to:

preach the gospel to the poor; (unable to supply our own needs)

he hath sent me to:

heal the brokenhearted, (emotional baggage of our sins)

to preach deliverance to the captives, (chains of our sins)

and recovering of sight to the blind, (spiritually blind)

to set at liberty them that are bruised, (sins of others)

19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. (jubblee year, all is restored)

e.       No vengeance now (Isaiah 61:2)

3.      The Reaction

f.       Filled with wrath

Luke 4:28-30

28 And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,

29 And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.

30 But he passing through the midst of them went his way,
