John 5:39-40
39 Search
the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life:
and they are
they which testify of me.
40
And ye will not come
to me, that ye might have life.
Introduction:
Jesus
speaking in His defense
declares that he is the person of the scriptures, and speaks of the
importance
of the scriptures.
1.
Jesus
is the Person of
the Scriptures (Word of God)
a.
Philip
to Nathanael
John
1:45
Philip
findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have
found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus
of Nazareth,
the son of
Joseph.
b.
Jesus
to the Jews at Jerusalem
John
5:45-47
45
Do not think that I
will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even
Moses, in
whom ye trust.
46
For had ye
believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.
47
But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe
my words?
c.
Abraham
to the Rich Man
Luke
16:29,
31 (27-31)

him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.

prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
d.
Jesus
to the disciples
on the road to Emmaus
Luke
24:25 (25-31)

them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have
spoken:
27
And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he
expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
e.
Paul
to King Agrippa
Acts
26:22-23
22
Having therefore
obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to
small and
great, saying none other things than those which the prophets
and Moses did
say should come:
23
That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the
first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the
people,
and to the Gentiles.
Paul
says the gospel of Jesus is from scriptures
1
Corinthians 15:1, 3-4
1
Moreover, brethren, I
declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye
have
received, and wherein ye stand;
3
For I delivered unto
you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ
died for our
sins according to the scriptures;
4
And that he was buried, and that he rose again the
third day according to the scriptures:

suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that

The
Person of the Word
of God
The
best translation is when we translate the Word of God
into our daily life

are to be the Word of
God

Ye are our epistle
written in our hearts, known and read of all men:

of the
living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.
b.
We
are to be the very
Image of Jesus Christ
2

But
we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory
of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even
as by
the Spirit of the Lord.

whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed
to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among
many
brethren.

We
are to have the mind
of Jesus Christ

beseech you
therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies
a
living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye
transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove
what is that
good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

2:5
Let
this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
