Title: The Passion of Jesus Christ

 


Text: Acts 1:1-3

1, The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,

2, Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:

3, To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:

Luke writing to Theophilus - ALL.

Luke 1:1-4

1, Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,

2, Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;

3, It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,

4, That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.

Passion  NT:3958 ‎pa/sxw ‎pascho (pas'-kho); including the forms (patho (path'-o) and pentho (pen'-tho)), used only in certain tenses for it; apparently a primary verb; to experience a sensation or impression (usually painful):

    1.      Jesus foretells of “His Passion”

    a.       Luke records Jesus referring to His Passion three times.

    1.      Context: Who do people say I am? (Luke 9:18-20)

Luke 9:22

Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.

    2.      Context: When the kingdom of God should come? (Luke 17:20, 23, 34-36)

Luke 17:25

But first must he suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation.

    3.      Context: At the Passover instituting the Lord’s Supper. (Luke 22:14, 16, 18)

Luke 22:15

And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer:





    2.      Jesus During “His Passion”

    a.       Luke records Jesus during His Passion speaking three times.

    1.      Luke 23:34 (33, 35)

Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

    2.      Luke 23:43 (39-42)

And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

    3.      Luke 23:46 (44-46, 47)

And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

John 10:15, 17-18

15, As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.

17, Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.

18, No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

Christ speaks of His Passion after His resurrection

Luke 24:46-48

46, And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:

47, And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

48, And ye are witnesses of these things.
